LEADERSHIP and the LESSONS it taught me.

In the last one year[2013] I have been involved(for the first time) in many team works, professional and propounding, leading a team, accomplishing projects before deadline, working late night and long hours and obviously controversies, arguments, corrupted thoughts and pessimistic and optimistic frills and thrills at several times. It was naive observation and an experience added in my timeline that taught me many things regarding a leader and his leadership qualities and responsibilities.

Leadership is a personal trait, a quality imbibed in self attitude and can not be simply read and learned from books! This is the ideology that drove me to work versatile, out of my comfort zone, out of the box, in search my personalized qualities and assessing their competencies for leadership role.

Leading a team and managing a work is so eccentric and unpredictable. It’s tougher than it sounds and myriad colours cover it, more boggling than it seems highlighted from inexperienced perspective. So Recently I have been obsessed to harness leadership qualities. It’s a new challenge in my life. Hope I will have a relentless journey with my new endeavour called LEADERSHIP.

Here are the lessons observed, learned and listed from my first team work. {Large sale, professional and monetised jobs} Please do take care of the factoid that these are abstracts from personal experiences of {Say Hi to me} and not from researched databases. The lessons listed have personal remarks related. Hope you wont mind that crap !

Dreams that show the way ahead: Plan every little Details of the work. Go to the field (spot), judge the possibilities and practicality of the idea, both before and after the plan is scribbled.

Having big dreams and plans embedded in mind, ideas scribbled on notepad is not enough. A leader should be able to communicate, explain and make people believe in his dream, and be able to give out the tiniest details at any point of time. It’s this ability to dream big together with a keen attention to detail that differentiates a leader from the rest of the team. It is critical for a leader to have the ability to explore not just the topic at hand, but also to analyse the reasons and issues around it.

🙂 My plans shattered and frustrated me numerous times from beginning to end. Capital, Time, Work force, Inventory and what not, every detail required keen attention. Mistakes, consumed extra effort and embarrassment. It can hike you expenses and sometimes horrendously ruin your schedule. That was the most intriguing lesson as well, I will never forget.

N.B : No body plans to fail, but fails to plan.

Smart and Wise:  Know Yourself, Know what to do and What may stop you, predict obstacles, list out dos and don’ts, Pros and Cons and then act upon.

A smart leader is characterized by their relentless passion toward work, efficient time and effort management, using proper skills at appropriate time. Smart leaders tend to polarize people. On the other hand, the driving force of a wise leader is purpose, values, and a passion to succeed at work. A wise leader brings with him the ability to mobilize people.

🙂 I am a serious guy, whatever I do, eat, play, study, work or stalk a girl, I put all my time, effort and efficiency. Multitasking is not my cup of tea. So I did not have to suffer much on “how to do”, “what to do” and “when to do” problems. Although my plans were weak and leaky but i had outstanding capabilities to face new plans, changes and on-spot implementation of any short comings.

Patience and Impatience: I am never satisfied with what attained. Perfection is not the final outcome. A better face is always there that needs to be dig out.

Impatience goes hand in hand with energy, purpose and intensity. A leader impatient for results, shows how engaged he is to achieve an outcome. However, when it comes to people it is altogether a different ball game. Leaders need to be patient with people, the so called team members. It will help you discover merits and talents in people which are beyond expectations. Being patient with people will enable a leader to respect different types of people and appreciate their strengths and weaknesses. Impatience towards results and patience with people is the success mantra.

🙂 I am a guy with easily convincible mind, a soft empathy heart and considerable mind. Along with managing the team I was also highly involved in the work. Whenever, where ever there were some derailed work, I got involved and fixed with no split-second thought of blaming the defaulter.

Intelligent and interesting: Transform yourself to fit and shape in as per the the situation demand and need of time. Metamorphosis to fit with you fellow team mates is the only way to get engaged and involved with them.

One should also be intelligent. Intelligent people will be always hungry to learn, curious about things happening around the globe and will have an uncanny knack of understanding things on their own. But does intelligence alone suffice at the next level of leadership? Imagine a person who is intelligent, but who fails to generate interest among his peers and people. Would he ever be successful as a leader? The mantra is to be intelligent and interesting at the same time.

As a leader, one needs to generate interest among the people who are part of his corporate and social ecosystem. With intelligence becoming a common denominator for leaders in today’s world, being interesting as well, is the key differentiator of a top class leader.

🙂 Well this got me to a lot of problems. People don’t like you if you are harsh with them regarding work, on the other hand if you are generous and so kind, they will betray you with false excuses, cheats and dishonesty. Even if the work is interesting, all are not passionate about it, for majority, earning is the main motive, they have no other second thought other than what work they are advised and ordered to do.

Inspire and Aspire: Engage and involve everyone. Make everyone feel so special that they were never before. Treat professionally not personally. All are equal. A resource you have to convert to Kinetic from potential. One of the major reasons why people sign up for a leader is the level of inspiration he is able to provide his supporters. A leader can inspire others by being a role model, walking the talk or by being a great motivational speaker. Inspiring and motivating people to believe your visions and work towards a common goal is one of the greatest assets of any successful leader. However, providing inspiration alone is not enough in the long run. A leader has to inspire people to fulfill their own aspirations as well. Aspirations are individualistic in nature and as a leader if you can provide people around you ways to fulfil their aspirations, and inspiring them at the same time. This is what a good leader should aim to do.

🙂 Regarding this I had no opinion. I didn’t pay attention, neither had I stopped by to observe how I inspires or aspired or impacted the individuals in my team. As a lead, I didn’t have time to analyse that.

Mind and Mind-set : keep yourself clean, confusion free and get rid of any hide-and –seek, unfair play and personal relations, favours and discrimination.                                                                A leader’s success is not only dependent on the sharpness of his mind; rather it’s a combination of his mind and mind-set.  To have an open mind with the right mind-set to achieve great heights. A sharp mind is an individual trait that can be achieved through determination and consistent hard work. The right mind-set can decide whether you succeed or fail. The right mind-set is self-nurturing in nature and it benefits not only the person, but the people you interact with.

🙂 I had a lot of problem regarding proper mind set for kindness and cordially collaborate, order and advise the team mates. It often created a second thought of inferiority complex, discrimination and importance among the members. All have different mind sets, mentality, morality, intension, emotion, quality of thinking and level of capability to compromise and adjust at situations. Duh! It’s difficult!

Thanks for your patience up to this.                                                                                                                   You can hep me on this. Post your suggestions on the comment box below.
